Ms. Creole Caribbean 2009

Ms. Creole Caribbean 2009

Congratulations are in order for Ms. Jamie-Lynell Ellis, the first ever Ms.Creole Canada 2009. Jamie captured the prizes for Best Swimwear, Best Talent, Best Evening Wear and Best National Wear. Each of the ladies from Dominica and Haiti represented their countries well but none could surpass her standard.
Jamie’s monologue captivated her audience throughout her performance as she made sure to incorporate the culture and phrases of St.Lucia.  St.Lucian members of the audience were doubled over in fits of laughter when Jamie used some of our Patois phrases and made sure to end her monologue with the phrase “How is me uh?”

The elegance and grace with which she carried the Wob Dwiyet (St.Lucia’s National Wear) undoubtedly contributed to her win and her evening wear which was representative of a lava flow from the world’s only drive-in volcano which is located in Soufriere, St.Lucia was indeed designed for a queen. Jamie’s response during the question segment of the show reminded the women of today’s society that we can be anything that we want to be and that we do not have to fit into the mold of some of the roles defined for women  in earlier societies.
Jamie has made St. Lucia proud! Congratulations once again! Next year’s contestants will surely have to work hard to reach the standard of our queen- Ms. Jamie-Lynell.

Jamie Poise, Confidence & Elegance are all qualities exuded by   Ms. Jamie Ellis, St. Lucian representative for the Ms.Creole Canada.
Ms. Ellis has a passion to represent her country in a positive manner whenever the opportunity arises. She was the first runner up in the Ms. Queen of the Islands which was held in Toronto in 2008 and will once again compete for another title, this time one which is representative of her Creole heritage.
Jamie is 25 years old and is currently pursuing a degree in Corporate Media Productions. This charismatic young lady aspires to work in the field of Public Relations for a charitable organization. She has already taken steps in the pursuit of her dream. Jamie has positively impacted the lives of young people during her two year tenure at the Holy Family Children’s Home in St. Lucia. She continues to assist whenever she is visiting her island home and has also chosen the St. Jude’s hospital as one of the recipients of donations from the proceeds of the show.
Jamie counts her blessings each day and has a positive perspective on life. She chooses to view her glass as half full as opposed to half empty. “We are all here in transit, birth our arrival, and death our departure”. This is Jamie’s philosophy on life and helps to keep her grounded on her path to follow a meaningful and memorable journey.

This young queen is inspired by her mother who embraces life and who relies on her faith to carry her through. She admires her mother’s strength and endurance in the face of challenges and opportunities.
Jamie is destined to achieve greatness. She always seeks opportunities to accomplish more and knows that she can be anything that she wants to be. Look out Oprah! Ms. Jamie Ellis is on her way!

What can we expect from Jamie on the night of her performance?

The following words were posted on my co-workers office door. I thought they were very inspirational and decided to share with my fellow PositiveVibez readers. Hope you enjoy. I apologize for being unable to give credit to the writer as there was no name associated with the words. Do enjoy.

Why shouldn’t you be happy and funny or famous or anything else you choose to be?

Why shouldn’t you travel and laugh and smile and dream or fall deep, deep in love?

Why shouldn’t you conquer your fears until there aren’t any left?

Or leave all of your worries far,far behind?

Why shouldn’t you have the life that you’ve always dreamt of?

The one deep down inside?

You should go get it.

It’s yours.

No regrets. Live life.

Wow! It’s already the beginning of a new month! It felt like September was on a race to the finish! It was quite a hectic month: Started my first semester of my second year of uni and boy oh boy does it feel like we never had a summer vacation :S. Settling into my apartment and keeping up with classes, campus jobs and events used up most of my hours and on some days…my energy. Overall it was a good month. Of course it wasn’t a perfect month and I did make some mistakes here and there but I just hope and pray that I LEARN from them.

As this month begins, I’d like to set a few goals for myself:
1. Make an effort to attend church.
2. Continue going to the gym now that I’m back in the groove.(You should try it too. The natural high is exhilarating)
3. Keep on top of my studies and aim for A’s on my midterms(ALOT of studying required there)
4. Eat less cookies! This means I have to stop myself from buying them when I do my weekly grocery shopping.
5. Make a budget because I really can’t stand being broke at the end of the month as a result of mismanaging funds in the beginning.
6. Try my best not to complain about the fast approaching cold weather, though I wish it would have taken its time.
7. Enjoy each and every day, including the challenges and joys and

8.Think Twice before making certain decisions, making sure to remember that every decision comes with a consequence, whether or not we want to admit it.

It’s a new month! Make an effort to embrace the opportunity to set some new goals and start afresh with a POSITIVE ATTITUDE! Remember that negativity will only bring you on a journey to sad city. It’s acceptable to have some downtime because the rainy days do come along but remember they don’t last forever. The sun does shine again.

Emotions

When I woke up this morning, I was full of joy and looking forward to my wonderful Thursday. “I turned my swag on” as they say, and went along my merry way to my Systems Analysis class. I went to this class with the goal of gaining some knowledge and achieving a score of 10/10 on my in-class quiz because I had hoped to surpass my 9/10 score from last Thursday.
So as the story goes, I sat closer to the back since I arrived late, and as my luck would have it, I sat right in front of four talkers who just couldn’t stop blabbing throughout the class. My joy quickly changed into anger and frustration as I bubbled over with the urge to ask them to shut their mouths. By the end of the class I was on the verge of hyperventilating because I was so angry and was even less happy because my dreams of 10/10 were dashed after I saw the 4/10 score. 4/10???? after sitting in a class for 3 whole hours?

I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m even bothering to share this story.
Lesson #1
As my mama told me tonight, “Don’t let them steal your joy!” and as she rightfully said, while I was busy being angry, the four talkers were happy and quite oblivious that they were being such a pain in the you know where. The lesson to be learnt here is that people won’t change their behaviour if they are not aware that it is bothering someone else. Therefore, there is no point being angry at other people if you haven’t made them aware of the effects of their actions(though it should be obvious in some cases). In the future, I will surely not hesistate to ask the talkers to keep it down because I cannot afford to waste a cent of the tuition money being paid.

Lesson #2
The 4/10 does not mean that I am a failure. It is just motivation for me to work harder and to accomplish more next week. Life goes on. This isn’t the end of the world.

“It matters not how many times you fall. It matters more how many times you rise.”

Keep the positive energy flowing always!

I couldn’t resist sharing with those of you who haven’t yet heard the talent that the beautiful island of St.Lucia has to offer. I’m really proud of Kayo who has just released his first video. I’ve also featured a new track from Stacy Iman Charles who is also from St. Lucia.

Look out for Kayo and Jason Lovence who are gonna be featured on the Spotlight758 page in the near future. Jason is the guitarist in Kayo’s Endless Summer video and is also responsible for the musical arrangement of Endless Summer as well as Stacy’s song Forever. I’m proud to say that my island is blessed with many talented persons. To check out more of Kayo, visit his blog at www.caribbeancarter.com

Hope our young people continue to do well.
Keep your head up and remember that your best days are ahead!

“Do you feel like you have power in society?”

This thought provoking question is one which stood out during a Meet and Greet held by the United Black Students at Ryerson(UBSR). What do I have the power to do ? Who do I have the power to help?
What about you? Who do you think you can positively influence? What can you change in your life and in the lives of others?

I think each of us has the ability to influence others. We’re all young, fit and able and fully capable of making a difference. How will we use our power?
Hope this got you thinking too and hope you’re keeping up the Positive Vibez.

Ovo

I was very fortunate to be a member of the Cirque du Soleil audience. The show featured acts which can only be described as fantastic, fantabulous, awesome, one of a kind and just out of this world. My facial muscles did quite a bit of work as my expressions went from surprise to bemusement to disbelief at the strength, flexibility, and high levels of concentration of the performers. Oh how I marveled at the capabilities of the human body, reaching far beyond that of one’s imagination. The sounds of the live band permeated the atmosphere and flowed through every musical vein in my body. The sense of smell was not forgotten as the producers ensured that the audience inhaled the waft of petal scented air which filled the tent as a flower blossomed on stage. The acts allowed us a sneak peak into the daily life of an insect and almost had the potential to make me develop a liking insects but I’m afraid that may be wishful thinking on my part.

The 25th anniversary double album souvenir which I could not resist purchasing, will hold a special place in my musical collection.

Summer 2k9 has come to an end. I’m now counting down the hours till I leave my beautiful island to head back to school. This vacation has surely joined the ranks of the Best Summer Vacations. The treasured moments spent with family and friends-both old and new have each contributed to making my time here as enjoyable as it was. The photo store will definitely be making some money off all the pics I’ll be printing to remind me of the funtimes.

This semester I am aiming for the top. Think I’m gonna have to stick some A+s around my room to remind myself of my goals. There’s so much to look forward to. A new room mate, new apartment, new jobs, new groups and so much more. I’m gonna have a lot more growing up to do during this year as I’ll know longer be living in the more sheltered campus environment. I’ll be sure to keep you posted about my cooking adventures for which I know there will be some funny stories to tell.

Thank God for all his mercies. The past 4 months have been a blast and now I’m looking ahead to a bright future with the help of my good friend Jesus :D .

Till we chat again, remember that All things are possible with Christ who strengthens you.
Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and reach for what you would like to achieve. Time waits for none of us.
